Just a Can.♥


I was just at a coffee shop with my family having breakfast yesterday. The place was rather noisy, filled with the endless chatter of the middle aged aunts near by and the low ceiling didn't help either.

An old lady with wrinkles in her face, and white hair quietly appproached our table. She was dressed in simple grandmotherly clothes and in her hands, she was clutching an oversized red plastic bag that was near bursting with empty soda cans. She requested if she could have the empty soda cans from which we had drunk from.

Seeing no additional use for the can, my mum willingly gave them to her.

Suddenly, a shout filled the air. I nearly jumped out of my seat and turned around to hear what the commotion was all about. It turns out that the roar of thunder came from a middle-aged lady. She had a waist pouch strapped around her waist, and she was holding a few empty coffee cups in her hands. I assume she sells drinks at the coffee shop.

She let loose a stream of hokkien. Being a doofus in hokkien, I could only manage to hear a few words. Later, with reconfirmation with my dad, it turns out that she was scolding the elderly lady for taking the cans.

I was stunned.

That elderly lady is making an honest living. She seems to not have a very stable income, seeing that she has to resort to collecting empty soda cans, possibly to sell and earn money. At least she is EARNING her income, not stealing or resorting to begging.

The drinks lady probably have as much use for the empty cans as us. The elderly lady is recycling the cans in a way true?

Why then did the drinks lady had to shout so loudly at her??

I feel so irritated by that.

The drinks lady would probably throw away the cans anyway. Why not just give them to the elderly lady to recycle? Both benefit right?

I mean, the environment wouldn't have to bear additional burden of those bags of cans.
